Cowboys and cowgirls descended on Kerrobert for two days of rodeo action sanctioned under the Kakeyow Cowboys Rodeo Association (KCRA).
The Kerrobert KCRA Rodeo was held over on July 7 and 8 and the event is run as two separate rodeos as is often the case with KCRA sanctioned events. The event had the usual timed and bucking events, along with breakaway roping for the ladies and steer riding.
Each day was its own rodeo, unlike two-day rodeos under other sanctioning bodies that take the best times and scores from both days to determine who takes home the money. More than 200 spectators packed the stands on both days of the rodeo.

The rodeo was supposed to start on July 7 at 3 p.m., but strong winds from a nearby storm system caused a 30-minute delay. When the action did get going, the events ran like clockwork and both days went smoothly for everyone involved.
“We had a really good weekend,” said Dustin Gintaut, a pickup man and president of the Kerrobert Rodeo committee. “Everything ran on time. Our competitors were all ready to go when it was their time to go, and we kept on schedule. The weather was great minus that wind.”
He noted that organizers made the call to tie down the beer gardens tent to nearby trailers. Once the wind died down on the first day of the rodeo, people returned to their seats and a good crowd enjoyed the rodeo action. Day 2 of the rodeo went even smoother with great weather and no wind delay.
Gintaut, who is also a commercial airline pilot, has been on the rodeo committee for five years, but it was his first year as president. He said organizers try their best to make it an event with things to do for people of all ages.
The beer gardens was open on Saturday until 1 a.m., and he said the venue was packed until it closed for the night. Gintaut said he believes support for the rodeo keeps growing and the people seem to be enjoying the show, so the support serves as motivation for the committee.
He said the KCRA is a starting point for rodeo competitors and, according to the pickup man, there is no better association to learn the sport and get a foot in the door. All in all, Gintaut said it was a great weekend and “we’re really pleased.”
The rodeo cannot happen without community support, he said. The rodeo needs volunteers to make it happen, so the committee welcomes people who want to help in the future. He added the committee would like to thank the community, sponsors and volunteers.
