Members of the Rosetown Royals Speed Swim Team brought back four medals from the provincial meet in Estevan on July 28.

Janel Merrifield, 38, won two races in the women’s 18 and over category: the 50-metre freestyle and butterfly races.

Jordan Merrifield, 9, placed third in the 9-10 girls 50-metre butterfly and swam in four other races.

Cordelia Scott, 8, finished third in the 7-8 girls 50-metre breaststroke and swam in three other races.

Amanda McPhee, 14, swam in three races in the 13-14 girls category.

Allister Merrifield, 12, swam in five races in the 11-12 girls category.

Josalyn Ashmore, 11, swam in two races in the same group.

Tari Wenzel, 10, swam in three 9-10 girls races.

Alexander Scott, 7, swam in four 7-8 boys races.

Jude Merrifield, 7, swam in two races in the same category.

Lisa Ashmore has coached the Royals swimmers for the past three seasons, since her daughter Josalyn got started, she said.

Brent Wenzel had been the sole coach when a request was made for volunteers to help him coach, said Ashmore.

She had swam as a youth but had never been a speed swimmer, she said. She had also never coached any other sport.

Ashmore took the weekend-long Swim 101 course offered by Swim Saskatchewan for entry-level coaches, she said.

But she said, “Honest to goodness, you do a lot of on-the-job training,” and has learned much from Wenzel, she said.

Ashmore will continue to coach as long as Josalyn is involved. “I’ve liked it.”
