The West Central Bantam Wheat Kings are the Saskatchewan Bantam AA league champions after defeating the Regina Monarchs in two straight games in the best-of-three series. The first-place Wheat Kings defeated the Monarchs in game one 5-1 in Dodsland and then won 3-2 in overtime in Regina March 22. Members of the Wheat Kings who competed in the finals are Kyle Heintz, Eric Robbie, Ethan Hilbig, Austin Reschny, Zak Dean, Joseph L’Heureux, Carter Cormier, Levi Brewer, Logan Linklater, Kayden Ostrom, Jakin Lawrence, Gavin Halter-Metcalf, Jack Hartsook, Tylin Hilbig, Brody Gasmo, Noah Martens and Jaxon Neufeld. Coaches are Brey Fiset, Tyrell King and Chris Keleher.

The West Central Wheat Kings are the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League champions and will now represent the province at the Western Canadian AAA Bantam championships in Kamloops this weekend.

They will be competing against the host Thompson Blazers, the Seafair Islanders (B.C. champions), Airdrie Extreme (Alberta champions) and the Winnipeg Hawks (Manitoba champions).

They will kick off the round-robin tournament Thursday again Airdrie, then play Winnipeg Friday at noon; Thompson Saturday morning and the Islanders Saturday afternoon. Bronze and gold medal games will be played on Sunday.

In this game, the Wheat Kings had to mount a comeback after getting down 2-0 about midway through the second period.

Tylin Hilbig then took over for the club, scoring the next three goals, including one late in the second period; the lone goal of the third period and the overtime goal to get the win, scoring just 2:35 into the extra frame.

Noah Martens was in net for the Wheat Kings in this series clincher.

Game one played in Dodsland March 19 was a different story.

The Wheat Kings’ Brody Gasmo scored early in the game to set the pace. Logan Linklater added one more, shorthand with under a minute remaining.

In the second, Hilbig would make it 3-0, scoring a power play marker with 2:09 remaining in the period. The Monarchs replied just over a minute later to make it 3-1 going into intermission.

Eric Robbie and Kyle Heintz would put the game away for the Wheat Kings.

Noah Martens was once again in net for the black and gold.
