John Staples with his fiancée Ashley Darymple will be heading to Australia where John will be continuing on to the Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and Ashley has been accepted to work in the Australia’s Bionics Institute.

On June 16, approximately 80 doctors, instructors, support staff, and family gathered at a restaurant for the College of Plastic Surgery graduation. This year’s graduates were Kindersley native John Staples and Eric Fung. The college graduates a maximum of two students annually who have completed their residence in plastic surgery.

John began post-secondary education in Saskatoon, where he graduated Engineering Physics, earning the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan Gold medal. John was also awarded Engineering Physics Distinguished Graduate Award. Also awarded the Dr. E.L. Harrington Prize.

He then took a year of pre-med classes to be able to enter the College of Medicine. Following that year, he moved to Edmonton, where he worked in the cancer research field.

Upon acceptance to the School of Medicine, he graduated in four years. He then applied across Canada to different schools to specialize in plastic surgery. His focus was on reconstructive surgery. He was accepted at a number of North American schools but chose to remain in Edmonton. He has had a five-year residency in reconstructive plastic surgery, with emphasis on adolescence facial reconstruction. He was the only one in his class to successfully complete his Canada medical exams that make him a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

John applied to numerous institutes of higher learning where he could study under some of the leading surgeons in the world. He was accepted in Houston and Dallas, Texas, Seattle, Wash., Toronto and Melbourne, Australia. The only fellowship course in Canada is in Toronto. Each school only accepts one applicant per year.

He will be continuing on to the Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, where he will be guided by Dr. John Burge and his team.

John will be joined by his fiancée Ashley Darymple once she has successfully defended her thesis for her doctorate of nero-science. She has been accepted to work in the Australia’s Bionics Institute.
