The 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT, once a solid contender in the new mid-size sedan market, remains an appealing option in the used car market. Though the model wasn’t a huge seller for VW, its unique blend of sportiness and practicality makes it a standout choice for drivers seeking a vehicle with personality.

The 2018 Passat GT is powered by a robust 3.6-litre V6 engine, delivering 280 horsepower and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. As a front-wheel-drive vehicle, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under seven seconds, which was impressive for its class at the time and still holds up today. While it’s no fuel-sipper, the fuel economy isn’t terrible for a V6, offering around 10.6 litres per 100 km in combined driving conditions. That said, today’s buyers might be more conscious of fuel efficiency, so this could be a point of consideration.

One of the strongest selling points for the 2018 Passat GT is its interior space. It comfortably seats five adults and boasts a cavernous 450-litre trunk, which is more than sufficient for most hauling needs. Whether you’re carrying golf clubs or a full acoustic drum kit (as per my standard measure), the Passat’s trunk size is one of the largest in its class. In terms of backseat legroom and overall comfort, the Passat still competes well with newer models in the mid-size sedan market.

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT is a handsome automobile. Wide road stance, tasteful red trim and generously sized wheels make for a car that has much more presence than most of its rivals.

The Passat GT was packed with technology for 2018, and in 2024, these features still hold up, making it a good value for those looking for a used car. Standard features include traction control, stability control, a backup camera, three-setting heated seats, and Apple/Android compatibility. While these features may not be groundbreaking by today’s standards, they are more than adequate for most drivers.

What sets the Passat GT apart from many of its rivals is its driving dynamics. It may not be a full-fledged sports sedan, but it certainly feels like one, thanks to its firm and responsive suspension. While the ride is a bit harsher than more comfort-oriented sedans, it’s ideal for those who appreciate a more tactile, connected driving experience. The V6 engine provides a subtle yet satisfying rumble, and the power delivery is smooth, making it a joy to drive on both city streets and highways.

While the 2018 Passat GT doesn’t have the jaw-dropping looks of the earlier CC model, it is still a sharp and handsome car. Its wide stance, red trim accents, and generously sized wheels give it a road presence that few other mid-size sedans can match. It’s a conservative design, but one that has aged gracefully into 2024, especially when compared to rivals like the Honda Accord.

You can expect to find a well-maintained 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT for between $20,000 and $27,000, depending on mileage, condition, and features. This represents good value, especially given the sporty V6 engine, premium feel, and spacious interior. Compared to other mid-size sedans from the same period, the Passat GT remains a bit of a niche choice, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a bit of an under-the-radar option, and for those who want something a little different from the standard Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, the Passat GT offers a compelling alternative.

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT stands out for its blend of performance, spaciousness, and driving enjoyment. While it may not have the latest tech features of newer models, it offers a lot of value for the price. If you’re looking for a family sedan that can deliver a more engaging drive, this Passat is definitely worth considering.

Just be mindful of the fuel economy and potential maintenance costs, as is typical with older V6 engines.
