If you’re looking for a large, luxury sedan that is all-electric, the Genesis Electrified G80 is the newest one on the market, introduced last June.
I recently test drove two different Electrified G80s, and the more I drove them, the more impressed I was. They’re quiet, luxurious and fast.
While some automakers have unique names for their all-electric models, Genesis simply puts the word “Electrified” in front of the model number.
Although I didn’t test a gasoline version of the G80, I did drive the smaller gas-powered G70. Everything that impressed me on the G70 was even more impressive on the G80. As well, the Electrified G80 meant no stops at gas stations, and it has a range of 454 km.
Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury brand, aimed squarely at the likes of Audi, BMW, Infinity, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. The G80 is the mid-size Genesis sedan, sitting on a wheelbase of 3,010 mm (118.5 in) and with an overall length of 4,995 mm (196.7 in). That makes the G80 larger than the G70 and smaller than the G90. Genesis also has three SUVs, the new all-electric GV60 and the larger, gas-powered GV70 and GV80.
As soon as I slid into the driver’s seat of the Electrified G80, luxury abounds. The fit and finish are outstanding, and the leather touch surfaces are absolutely gorgeous. The seats are even more comfortable than the G70. The powered driver’s seat slides so far back that I could barely touch the gas pedal, something I greatly appreciated as I am six feet tall. I wish more automakers offered this much legroom.
The layout of the dashboard and the horizontal screen for the navigation system add to the feeling of spaciousness. Unlike many other vehicles, the passenger and driver don’t seem to be separated in their own compartments.
Behind the wheel for just a few seconds and it’s easy to find every control. Everything is logically laid out, and it’s very intuitive to activate the sound system, plan your route with the navigation system, or set the heating or air conditioning to the ideal level. There’s nothing odd or quirky.
There’s an unbelievable amount of power when you step on the accelerator. What really impresses me is how quiet it is. The only sound you hear is the wheels rolling on the ground. That’s why some automakers are now developing a new line of tires designed specifically for electric cars that make for a quieter ride.
The handling on twisty roads is very good, thanks to the responsive steering. The ride is incredibly smooth and extremely quiet.
One of the best safety features is the Blind-Spot View Monitor, which is also available on a range of Hyundai products. Instead of just a beep or flashing light if a vehicle gets too close, when you put the signal on, the Blind-Spot View Monitor cameras on the bottom of the outside rearview mirrors provide a view of what’s right behind and beside you – with the image then projected on the dashboard. It’s especially helpful if, for example, a cyclist is coming up fast on your right side as you are about the make a right turn. While this feature doesn’t replace the proper use of rearview mirrors, it can provide additional safety.
The luxury, handling, and safety features make the G80 a great ride – and not having to buy gasoline is an added bonus that will no doubt attract plenty of car shoppers.
