Macklin, Wilkie draw first blood in SWHL finals

The Wilkie Outlaws defeated Unity 6-2 in game one of their best-of-five Sask West Hockey League semifinal series on Friday night in Wilkie and Macklin defeated the visiting Kindersley Red Lions 6-3 on Sunday in game one of their series.

Wilkie plays in Unity tonight in game two, followed by game three on Feb. 27 in Wilkie. Game four, if necessary, will be played in Unity Feb. 28. Game five, again if necessary, will be played March 6 in Wilkie.

Game 2 of the of the Red Lions-Mohawks series was scheduled to have been played last Wednesday in Kindersley. Game 3 is set for Saturday in Macklin. Game four, if necessary, will be played in Kindersley on Feb. 28.

Provincials

Senior A

• Wilkie will take on Hague in their semifinals, starting Saturday at 8 p.m. in Wilkie. Game 2 is slated to take place in Hague March 2, followed by game three, if necessary, March 3 at 8 p.m. in Wilkie. Wilkie had defeated Hillmond in their first round series 2-0, winning by scores of 8-3 and 4-1.

• The Kindersley Red Lions will take on the Lumsden Monarchs in their second round series. This series will begin tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Kindersley. Game 2 is set for March 2 in Lumsden, followed by game three, if necessary, March 4 at 3:30 p.m. in Kindersley.

Kindersley earlier defeated Shaunavon in two straight games, winning 5-1 and 5-4.

Senior B

• Biggar will take on the Beechy Bombers in the semifinals. Game one of this series will take place March 2 in Beechy; game two is slated for March 3 in Biggar.

• Unity lost their series to Eston, losing by scores of 4-2 and 5-4.

Senior C

• The Eatonia Huskies take on the Gull Lake Greyhounds in the semifinals, starting in Eatonia on Saturday at 8 p.m. Game 2 is set for March 3 in Gull Lake.

• The Macklin Mohawks were defeated by the Hafford Hawks, losing by scores of 4-1 and 4-2 in their series.

• The Kerrobert Tigers take on the Hafford Hawks starting with game one on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Kerrobert followed by game two, March 3 in Hafford. They earlier defeated Lanigan, 6-2 and 8-4 in their two-game series.

Senior D

• The Luseland Mallards take on the Edam 3 Stars in their semifinals. Game 1 is set for this Sunday in Edam, followed by game two March 4 at 5 p.m. in Luseland.

The Mallards defeated Loreburn in their first round series by scores of 5-2 and 5-3.
